يمكن مؤشر ATR Trailing Stop المتاجرين من تحديد نقاط توقف الخسارة بعد حساب مستوى التقلب بمساعدة مؤشر ATR. تم تطبيق هذه الطريقة في الثمانينات بواسطة Turtle Traders الأسطوريين، ومنذ هذا التاريخ تم اعتبارها طريقة حديثة وفعالة في تجارة الفوركس.

يتضمن مؤشر ATR Trailing Stop للميتاتريدر خط واحد معروض في مخطط السعر، ويوضح هذا الخط مستويات السعر عند منطقة تعادل السعر؛ حيث يمكن ضبط وقف الخسارة لتعظيم الربح جراء نشاط المتاجرة.
وفي العادة، يستخدم المتاجرين المحترفين لوقف الخسارة، مستوى التقلب بناء على مؤشر ATR. إذن، عندما يكون السعر في حالة ارتفاع أو انخفاض نحو المستوى المستهدف، سيرسم المؤشر الفني الاتجاه الصاعد أو الهابط مشيراً إلى مستوى السعر والذي من المفترض أن يتم اختياره كنقطة لوقف الخسارة. يتم احتساب هذا المؤشر باستخدام المعامل القياسي لتقلبات السعر والذي يساوي 2.5 والأمثل بالنسبة لأهم الأسواق المالية (أي سيصبح مستوى وقف الخسارة بعيداً عن 2.5*ATR).
يعد هذا المؤشر، مؤشر اختياري ويفضل استخدامه في المتاجرة اليدوية.
